Sintiki: A place full of nature, history and authentic experiences

At the northernmost edge of Serres, where Greece meets Bulgaria, the municipality of Sintiki offers a distinctive mosaic of natural landscapes, historical monuments and traditional villages. Lakes, mountains, rivers, stone bridges, Byzantine monuments and thermal springs create a destination worth discovering in every season.

Lake Kerkini, one of Europe’s most important wetlands, is a landmark of the region. Trips aboard traditional plava boats, rare birdwatching and the sight of water buffalo herds offer unforgettable experiences.

On the slopes of Belles, leafy Ano Poroia charms visitors with its centuries-old plane trees, running waters and traditional tavernas. A little further east, Neo Petritsi is a starting point for walks through the Lontza Valley, to Soultanitsa Waterfall and along the mountain trails.

At Akritochori, the imposing Holy Monastery of Saint John the Baptist impresses with its Mount Athos-inspired architecture, while historic Vyronia, with its old railway station and aquarium, combines history with nature.

The Roupel Gorge holds a special place. Legendary Roupel Fort, the Metaxas Line fortifications and the Belles WWII Memorial Centre in Neo Petritsi offer a fascinating journey into the history of the Second World War.

In picturesque Agkistro, the Byzantine hammam, thermal springs and woodland trails combine relaxation with exploration. In Sidirokastro, the imposing Byzantine Issari Castle, with panoramic views of the town, the traditional Varosi quarter, the Krousovitis River and Zesta Nera reveal the charm of a place with a centuries-old history.

In the mountainous hinterland, the stone bridges of Krousovitis, Achladochori and Karydochori invite authentic outings in nature. In Vamvakofyto, the renowned Babougera custom and the local folklore museum keep folk traditions alive, while Thermopigi stands out for its palaeontological heritage.

Local flavours, buffalo products, traditional recipes and the hospitality of the people complete the experience. From Kerkini’s peaceful shores to the mountain trails, Sintiki lends itself to short escapes and longer explorations alike.

Sintiki is more than a place on the border. It is a destination filled with sights, stories and experiences waiting to be discovered.
